ALCATRAZ RIESLING

Alcatraz Vineyard is located in the heart of the famed Watervale sub-region of the Clare Valley. Planted in 1962, on an exposed easterly facing slope, it was given the nickname “Alcatraz” as their was no escaping the cold, wet winter days spent working the vines, and the name has stuck.
The Mitchell family purchased the property in 1984 and have continued to manage the vineyard in much the same way as it always was. no irrigation, no artificial herbicides or pesticides are used, hand pruned and picked, resulting in low yielding high quality fruit.
WINEMAKING
The Riesling fruit for this wine is predominately hand-picked, in the cool of the morning to help retain the natural acidity. Once in the winery, the fruit is then de-stemmed and gently pressed, before going through a slow ferment, a few months on fine lees and then in the bottle. Traditional winemaking that lets the quality of the vineyard and fruit shine through.
TASTING NOTE
A beautifully balanced Riesling. Classic flavours of lemon and lime are apparent immediately. With a long lingering finish. Chalky, clean and crunchy acid, with just a hint of sweetness that complements the citrus flavours.
