ALCATRAZ SHIRAZ

VINEYARD
Alcatraz Vineyard is located in the heart of the famed Watervale sub-region of the Clare
Valley. Planted in 1962, on an exposed easterly facing slope, it was given the nickname
“Alcatraz” as their was no escaping the cold, wet winter days spent working the vines, and
the name has stuck.
The Mitchell family purchased the property in 1984 and have continued to manage the
vineyard in much the same way as it always was. no irrigation, no artificial herbicides or
pesticides are used, hand pruned and picked, resulting in low yielding high quality fruit.
WINEMAKING
The fruit once harvested is de-stemmed, with a portion reserved to be added to the
ferment as whole bunches. It undergoes a natural ferment over around 20 days, then
aged in French oak puncheons for 18 months before bottling.
TASTING NOTE
An expressive Shiraz with generous character – think pepper, spice, plums and cherries!
These flavours are blended with soft, velvety tannins, making it an approachable wine to
drink now or cellar with patience!
